The High Cost of Divorce

September 10, 2026
00:00

Studies show that divorce carries lifelong negative implications for children. Dr. Dobson talks about the true cost of divorce.

Guest (Male): What is the real cost of divorce? Here's today's Dr. Dobson Minute with Dr. James Dobson.

Dr. James Dobson: I'm not talking about lawyer's fees or alimony or child support. Now researchers are finding out that high divorce rates carry major implications for the future of the nation. A recent study by the National Center for Health Statistics has found that school performance, physical and mental health in childhood, and dozens of behavioral problems are powerfully affected by a child's family life.

For example, children whose parents are divorced are twice as likely to have to repeat a grade in school as children living with both their biological parents. The rate of measured behavioral and emotional problems is three times higher in children from single-parent homes. Every day it becomes more and more clear: these times of quick and easy divorce are leading us down a path from which it will be difficult to recover.
