The Angels of Christmas, Part Two

December 19, 2010
Many people do not know that the word in the Bible translated “angel” really means “messenger.” There is one angel we especially connect with bringing a message. That angel is Gabriel, who announced to Mary that she would bear the Christ child. For a sinful human race, no more important message was ever sent.

We associate many things with the Christmas story: the manger, the shepherds, but perhaps most of all we think of angels, because it was angels who proclaimed the birth of the Savior. And so as Christmas draws near, we are going to be focusing on angels here on the Moody Church Hour.

Worship is not just an hour on Sunday morning. As we will learn today, worship, for the Christian, needs to become a way of life. We will find that a life of worship involves a cost, because without that cost, our worship is not genuine.

It was an unlikely place for a teaching on worship: a well along a dusty road. But here, Jesus taught a despised woman how to worship God. And today, He’ll teach us.

It’s sad, but true: some people will refuse reconciliation, and hang on to their hurts until their knuckles turn white. Letting go of past injustice seems, for many, to be the ultimate insult. After all, those injustices give these people their reason to go on fighting. Today: a call for all who hold their hurts dear to give them up, and be healed of their anger.

Someone once said, “the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” When it comes to reconciliation, people will stay divided until someone takes a step: the step Jesus spoke of when He said, “Go to your brother.” And we must go if the cycle of mistrust is to be broken. Today: making things right despite the difficulty.

It’s almost fashionable to sue someone these days. Court dockets are full as people demand payback for injustice. Sadly, too many of these cases involve Christians. The Apostle Paul has some pointed words for those who’d like to haul a fellow believer into court. Get set for some counter-cultural teaching.

“Someone’s out to get me.” That is what David must have thought as King Saul tried to kill him for ten long years. Many people are under constant attack by those who want to do them harm. What drives these “spear throwers?” And how do we as believers handle long-running attacks from others? Today: a biblical approach on what to do when reconciliation is not possible.

Families can be torn apart by feuds: long-running animosities usually caused by someone’s past unjust actions.  Whether due to some imagined or real hurt, or to an inheritance wrongly divided, some feuds go on for generations.  Unless the cycle is broken, hatred can consume blood relatives.  Is there a way out?

Eliphaz the Temanite told Job, “Man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.” And trouble is what two brothers had. Jacob and Esau are classic examples of how different two children can be. Like in any family, conflict was almost inevitable. Jacob the younger connived the birthright of Esau the older brother, and the lifelong battle began. Today you will hear lessons from the family of Isaac.

Jesus said “the thief comes to steal, kill and destroy.” Some people are destroyers, intent on ruining the lives of others.   This kind of person is typified in the Bible by Cain, who, in a fit of rage, killed his own brother at the dawn of humanity.
