Pastor Philip Miller

Taking The Cross Into The World

April 13, 2008

How can Christians impact a culture in which they are no longer different? These are the questions Dr. Lutzer poses, and answers, on today's broadcast.

There are many voices that oppose the message of the gospel, and they are getting louder all the time. Many authors are writing books promising that you can simply think your way to happiness, prosperity and health, and that looking to God for your supply is, at best, old-fashioned. One such book caught the eye of Dr. Lutzer, and on today's program, you will hear its message soundly debunked.

Leave it to TV to splash the headline that the bones of Jesus have been found in an old box in Jerusalem. Of course, the special comes on right before Easter. Today: an expose of some bad archaeology, and a look at how the critics of Christianity are marketing their wares in the media.

If you had met the resurrected Jesus along the Emmaus road, would you have recognized Him? "Surely, yes!" you might say...but think again. Before He entered Jerusalem on the donkey, Jesus cursed a fig tree that had not borne fruit. We might wonder "Why?" The sobering message of that event is our focus on this Palm Sunday edition of The Moody Church Hour.

The church ought to be a lighthouse...shining brightly in a dark world. For well over one hundred years, The Moody Church has done just that. People from all walks of life have found Christ as Savior through its multiple ministries. And it is all because faithful leaders through the decades have proclaimed the gospel that transforms lives.

We have all heard the song that says, "Red and yellow, black and white, all are precious in His sight." Indeed, the people of God come in all colors and from all nations. The Moody Church is a place where East meets West, black meets white and the rich meet the poor. It is "a trusted place where anyone can connect with God and others."

Since 1864, Moody Church has faithfully proclaimed the gospel without apology. As time passes, some ministries veer from their founder's vision. But D.L. Moody's church is "Still on Track," some 144 years down the road.

Down through history there have been many outpourings of the Holy Spirit. Often we call these times of revival, times when new life is infused into the church and, as a result, into the world at large. It is at these times that believers are motivated to pray like never before. Today, we will spend a final visit in First Thessalonians for a look at one major effect of God's special visitation upon His people.

The church is called to understand its role in the world. Paul told the believers at Thessalonica "you are sons of light...not of darkness...therefore let us not sleep, but let us watch and be sober..." Today we will be invited to put on the helmet of "the hope of salvation" as we await the Day of the Lord.
