Rescued from the Folly of Self-Salvation (Rescued: What God Did to Save Us)

We all are born with the potential for great good. But we’re also born with the potential for unimaginable evil because we were all born with sin.
As we read the last part of Romans 3, Paul gives us a stinging indictment of human nature—a life filled with doing good for others, being completely selfless—even those good works are tainted with sin and unsuitable for entrance into heaven.
But God has a plan, completely independent from anything we can do, that will save us and take away the stain of our sinful natures.

Religion can enable us to have a false sense of who we are. As a result of the Fall, we’re unable to see our own faults clearly—something that we all need to rectify. Jesus came to save us from the wrath of God. In today’s society, we’ve lost sight of God’s anger and hatred of sin, and we spend a great deal of energy trying to manage our sin. We want to justify the way we live even though we know, deep down, that it’s wrong. We’ll do anything to rationalize our immorality. As the Apostle Paul says, we take the unnatural and turn it into “natural.” In today’s message, we’ll look at the darkness of the human heart.

What would it take for you to deny your faith in Christ? As we look into the book of Revelation, we see that the Antichrist is given amazing authority. There will be one world religion and one world economy. And yet there will be people who refuse to submit and refuse to deny Christ—and many will be martyred because of it.
So how did these saints overcome the Antichrist? They called on the blood of the Lamb. Despite all of the persecution, they trusted in Jesus Christ.

The ultimate day of calamity will come when you’re standing before God and watching all you’ve achieved—your status, your wealth—go up in smoke. And as you watch it fade away, you find no reason at all for God to accept you as one of His own.
But if you’ve trusted Christ as your personal Savior, there’s no need to fear that day. “Be patient,” James says, “strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.”

The devil’s purpose for temptation is to split us from the fabric of God’s love—to make us believe that God doesn’t keep His promises. He’ll use people, events, health, wealth, guilt, injustice, and even the Word of God to bring out the worst in us.
But God has given us an arsenal to use against Satan. God’s people, His Word, and most of all, Jesus. When the devil comes to remind you of your past, you can use the Word of God and the work of Jesus to remind him of his future. Jesus has already fought the devil and won. It’s a done deal.
