Rescued from Religious Self-Deception (Rescued)

April 17, 2016

Religion can prevent people from understanding the truth; it can breed the pride that says “I’m okay.” In Romans chapter two, Paul addresses the religious elite of his day and unveils how ceremony has insulated them from God’s analysis of their hearts.  Self-deception is especially thick when expressed in religious terms, and we must be rescued from it.

Reading the book of Romans is like shining a light into our darkness. In its pages we see ourselves as we really are.  Without God’s grace, we are capable of awful things. In fact, we’re morally bankrupt compared to our Creator. Let us probe the darkness of the human heart and view the amazing light God sheds upon those who believe in Jesus.

If you’re tossed overboard into a stormy sea, the most important thing on your mind is rescue. It is life or death. Have you ever considered that all of humanity has gone overboard in the stormy sea of sin? The problem is that many do not realize they are drowning and are desperately in need of rescue.

The great unknown for all humanity is what happens after death. Is there really an afterlife? Near-death experiences don’t settle the matter since accounts vary.  Only the word of Jesus, who died and rose from the dead, can speak to the subject.

Before Jesus was betrayed, He went to a garden called Gethsemane to pray. Even though He was fully God, His humanity was on full display as He asked for the company of His closest friends to join Him.

These days, we are pressured to accept all kinds of things that dishonor God. We are told to be tolerant of alternate lifestyles, but when we present the gospel which includes God’s call for every person to repent, we are often labeled as intolerant bigots.

After all the pain of this world is over, the people of God have a glorious inheritance awaiting them. Those that believe in Jesus will one day be glorified, bathed in the very glory of God Himself.

The government throws billions of dollars at problems that money cannot solve. Despite education funding, the world still seems broken. There’s no doubt people need transformation, but only God can do that. The glory of God can change people from darkness to light.

One of the oldest books in the Bible asks a question that is still being asked today! In Job 14:14 we read, “If a man dies, shall he live again?” Life is not about riches or fame, success or failure. The deepest issue of life is what happens once it’s over. The glory of God makes it possible for us to face death with triumph.

Hurting is a part of life. Ask anyone in a cancer ward, facing a painful end to their life. No one is exempt from suffering. Sooner or later, we all experience it. But believers are promised that suffering for the sake of Jesus will be rewarded.
