Rescued From Dangerous Rationalizations (Rescued)

January 27, 2019

Football players call it “putting on your game face.” It means we project an air of invincibility whether we feel that way or not. To some degree, everyone projects an outward appearance that may not square with inner reality. With regard to salvation, it’s easy to make yourself and others believe that all is well when it’s far from well. In this message we learn how God delivers believers from this deceptive mindset.

Religion can prevent people from understanding the truth about themselves. Religion can breed the pride that says, “I’m okay.” In Romans chapter two, Paul addresses the religious elite of his day, and shows how ceremony and ritual had insulated them from God’s analysis of their hearts. Self-deception is especially deep when expressed in religious terms. In this message we discover why we need rescuing so badly.

Reading the book of Romans is like shining a light into darkness. In its pages we see ourselves as we really are. We find that, apart from God’s grace, we are capable of awful things. In fact, we’re morally bankrupt compared to our Creator. In this message we probe the darkness of the human heart, and the amazing light God shines into those hearts that come to believe in Jesus.

If you’re tossed overboard into a stormy sea, the most important thing on your mind is being rescued. It’s life or death. Humanity is overboard in the stormy sea of sin, and even though most people don’t realize it, they’re headed for an eternal death. Sinners need outside help, and so God has put in place a rescue plan from heaven: a plan outlined in the book of Romans.

All of us desire to be great. Some of us even desire to do great things for God, but is unholy ambition lurking beneath the surface? Are our motives pure? In this message, Pastor Lutzer shows us the difference between selfishness and greatness.

A procession of Magi from the east came to Jerusalem in search of a new King of the Jews. King Herod played along with them so he could destroy this threat to his rule. A star appeared in the sky, leading the Magi to the humble dwelling of Mary and Joseph.

An old man had served in the Temple in Jerusalem all his life. The climax of his life came one day when Mary and Joseph brought the child Jesus to him. Led by the Holy Spirit, Simeon knew he was witnessing the hope of his nation as well as the entire world.

The night sky over Bethlehem was suddenly ablaze with light. A host of angels appeared, announcing the birth of Jesus. Their audience was a group of terrified shepherds. No wonder the angels’ first words were “Fear not!”

In a world of increasing chaos, people yearn for something to hold onto. The Christmas season reminds us that God Himself invaded human time and space when Jesus was born in Bethlehem. His entrance was announced through a word of hope given by an angel to a young Jewish maiden over two thousand years ago.

It’s human nature to want to be in control and to manipulate circumstances in our favor. The Old Testament patriarch Jacob was a schemer who sought to gain every advantage he could. It took a dramatic intervention in his life for him to realize that God was in control, not Jacob. The lesson he learned is our lesson to learn as well.

How can we please God? How can we know His will? At the end of 1 Thessalonians, Paul gives his readers commands to follow—commands we should all follow, including being thankful no matter what. By obeying these commands, we will not only know the will of God, we will also please Him… always!
