Rescued by a Hand from Heaven (Rescued: What God Did to Save Us)

June 9, 2013

The Gospel is not just information—it’s intervention. Only God can change the human heart. Only God can change our motivations and desires. Only God can save us from our sinful selves. In this first message on the book of Romans, Pastor Lutzer explains why this book is one of the most important books in the New Testament and how Romans has had a huge impact on Christianity.

In today’s world, Christians are pressured to accept all kinds of things that dishonor God from same-sex marriage to so-called abortion “rights.” We’re told to be tolerant of alternate lifestyles, yet we are becoming more confined to where and, in some cases, how we present the Gospel.

As the central figure in all of human history, Jesus Christ stands alone as the mediator between God and man. No one has ever commanded people’s allegiance—and hatred—as has the Jesus who lived 2,000 years ago. While some say it’s okay to believe in God, they recoil at believing in Jesus. In this message: an honest look at the claims Jesus made, and the choice all of us must make regarding the Son of God.

To endure times of hardship, we need to have a support system in place. We need to be in the Word of God. We need to spend time in the presence of God. And we need to be in fellowship with the people of God. With these in place, God can revive our souls even in the middle of a dry and dusty land.

What would it take for you to deny your faith in Christ? As we look into the book of Revelation, we see that the Antichrist is given amazing authority. There will be one world religion and one world economy. And yet there will be people who refuse to submit and refuse to deny Christ—and many will be martyred because of it.  So how did these saints overcome the Antichrist? They called on the blood of the Lamb. Despite all of the persecution, they trusted in Jesus Christ.

The ultimate day of calamity will come when you’re standing before God and watching all you’ve achieved—your status, your wealth—go up in smoke. And as you watch it fade away, you find no reason at all for God to accept you as one of His own.  But if you’ve trusted Christ as your personal Savior, there’s no need to fear that day. “Be patient,” James says, “strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.”

The devil’s purpose for temptation is to split us from the fabric of God’s love—to make us believe that God doesn’t keep His promises. He’ll use people, events, health, wealth, guilt, injustice, and even the Word of God to bring out the worst in us. But God has given us an arsenal to use against Satan. God’s people, His Word, and most of all, Jesus. When the devil comes to remind you of your past, you can use the Word of God and the work of Jesus to remind him of his future. Jesus has already fought the devil and won. It’s a done deal.

Imagine being Naomi or Ruth. You’re going through incredible personal loss in the midst of a famine. That may be all we see, but God is working during such times. And in the four short chapters of the book of Ruth, we see God moving forward with His plan of redemption.  By the end of the book, we find out that Boaz and Ruth are the great-grandparents of King David. Fast forward to the first chapter of the book of Matthew and we see that Boaz and Ruth are in the genealogy of Jesus. Even in our darkest days, God is still there, and He’s still in control.

Where do you turn when hardship hits? Do you trust God to see you through those tough times? Abram (Abraham) was in the will of God when famine hit the land. He went to Egypt, told a lie about his wife, and the ramifications are still felt today.  Isaac, faced with the same situation, stayed where God wanted him. And in the midst of the famine, Isaac harvested a hundredfold that season. God is able to provide for us in the middle of a hardship. But do we trust Him to do so?

Is the United States under God’s judgment? As we look at the rise of secularism, apostasy, and moral corruption, we shouldn’t be surprised if God has said, “Enough is enough,” and is taking us, as a nation, to a place we’ve never been before.  In this message, Pastor Lutzer compares the judgments—moral, economic, and religious—in the book of Jeremiah to what is happening in the U.S. today. He reminds us that we were born in this day and age to prove God’s faithfulness in the midst of a nation that is under judgment.

Death is inevitable. All of us must pass through this gateway into the life to come. Death has been called the last enemy, and only one man has ever conquered this fearful foe. Today: a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.
