Preparing for the Day of Calamity (Famines, Deserts, and Other Hard Places)

May 5, 2013

The ultimate day of calamity will come when you’re standing before God and watching all you’ve achieved—your status, your wealth—go up in smoke. And as you watch it fade away, you find no reason at all for God to accept you as one of His own.

But if you’ve trusted Christ as your personal Savior, there’s no need to fear that day. “Be patient,” James says, “strengthen your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is near.”

The devil’s purpose for temptation is to split us from the fabric of God’s love—to make us believe that God doesn’t keep His promises. He’ll use people, events, health, wealth, guilt, injustice, and even the Word of God to bring out the worst in us. But God has given us an arsenal to use against Satan. God’s people, His Word, and most of all, Jesus. When the devil comes to remind you of your past, you can use the Word of God and the work of Jesus to remind him of his future. Jesus has already fought the devil and won. It’s a done deal.

Imagine being Naomi or Ruth. You’re going through incredible personal loss in the midst of a famine. That may be all we see, but God is working during such times. And in the four short chapters of the book of Ruth, we see God moving forward with His plan of redemption.  By the end of the book, we find out that Boaz and Ruth are the great-grandparents of King David. Fast forward to the first chapter of the book of Matthew and we see that Boaz and Ruth are in the genealogy of Jesus. Even in our darkest days, God is still there, and He’s still in control.

Where do you turn when hardship hits? Do you trust God to see you through those tough times? Abram (Abraham) was in the will of God when famine hit the land. He went to Egypt, told a lie about his wife, and the ramifications are still felt today.  Isaac, faced with the same situation, stayed where God wanted him. And in the midst of the famine, Isaac harvested a hundredfold that season. God is able to provide for us in the middle of a hardship. But do we trust Him to do so?

Is the United States under God’s judgment? As we look at the rise of secularism, apostasy, and moral corruption, we shouldn’t be surprised if God has said, “Enough is enough,” and is taking us, as a nation, to a place we’ve never been before.  In this message, Pastor Lutzer compares the judgments—moral, economic, and religious—in the book of Jeremiah to what is happening in the U.S. today. He reminds us that we were born in this day and age to prove God’s faithfulness in the midst of a nation that is under judgment.

Death is inevitable. All of us must pass through this gateway into the life to come. Death has been called the last enemy, and only one man has ever conquered this fearful foe. Today: a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

The place is very, very old. Olive trees date back over a thousand years. Situated on the slopes of the Mount of Olives, it overlooks the ancient city of Jerusalem. You can visit this place today, and it looks much the same now as when Jesus was there thousands of years ago. The place is Gethsemane.

Think of living in a hotbed of terrorism. Americans remember the fear they felt in the aftermath of 9-11—a feeling that can be very real and very debilitating. Today’s fear is one of an uncertain economy and the possibility of job loss. How should Christians face the days that lie before us? On today’s program, hear a ringing call to rely on God, no matter what comes our way.

If the Lord brought a revival of repentance to a city, most people would rejoice. But not Jonah. He felt double-crossed. God withheld the judgment Jonah had prophesied against Nineveh. Today: God teaches a lesson to a man who still rebelled even after surviving a fish’s belly.

Some believers will only obey God after He teaches them a lesson the hard way. Jonah finallywent to Nineveh, a little the worse for wear after three days inside a fish. Even then, theprophet of God was not happy that wicked Ninevites might repent. Today: part three in the sagaof an unwilling servant of God.

There’s an old saying, “there are no atheists in foxholes.” Another place without atheists is in the belly of a great fish—as the prophet Jonah can attest to. Jonah found himself in a really tight place, and here he prayed like he’d never prayed before.
