Pleasing The Lord...Always!

November 30, 2008
Thanksgiving had simple roots. Early settlers to North America were just glad they had something to eat. Today, despite economic troubles, most of us have far more than the richest pilgrim back in the 1600's. On this program, we'll hear a message on three commands all believers must obey, commands that include being thankful, no matter what.

Wealth has a way of making us indifferent to the needs around us. After all, "If I'm OK, you must be OK." Jesus had some strong words for a church in Laodicea, a first-century place of prosperity. He said, "Because you are lukewarm, I will spew you out of my mouth." What could cause this condemnation? Today, we'll hear the final message in a series on what Jesus had to say to churches in the book of Revelation. Stay with us.

When opportunity knocks, it's up to us to open the door. It's true for investment decisions, and even more true in our spiritual lives. "I have placed before you an open door which no one can shut." These are the words of Jesus to a church in ancient Asia Minor, a church in a placed called Philadelphia. What was this door, and what does it mean to us in the 21st century? Today, we'll find out.

"I have not found your works perfect before God. Remember what you have received and heard: obey it, and repent." Strong words for a church, words from Jesus Himself as recorded in Revelation chapter three. What words would Jesus have for your church, or mine? Today, we'll learn what He said to the church at Sardis.

"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches." These are the words of Jesus in Revelation chapter two, words directed to the church at Thyatira in what is now modern Turkey. The lessons we can take from this church involve our personal holiness...and how well we distance ourselves from those who flaunt their immorality. Today: we'll find stern words from the Lord Himself about this church, and by implication, your church and mine.

Pergamum was a city in ancient Asia Minor in what is now Turkey. Its giant pagan altar can now be seen in the Pergamum Museum in Berlin. In Revelation chapter two, Jesus declared that Pergamum was the place "where Satan dwells," and a place rife with false teaching. Today: we'll see what the Lord Himself says about the church in that city, and what lessons we can take home for your church and mine.

In present-day Turkey is a city called Izmir. Now turn the clock back two thousand years and that city is called Smyrna, the site of one of the seven churches Jesus spoke of in the book of Revelation. In chapter two He tells the church at Smyrna, "I know your afflictions and your poverty, yet you are rich!" Today: we'll see what the Lord Himself says about afflictions and poverty: words we must heed in our day of affluence and ease.

Ancient Ephesus was a seaport in what is now modern Turkey. Known for its great temple to the pagan goddess Artemis, Ephesus was the location of a church founded by the Apostle Paul. In Revelation chapter two we find a message to the Ephesians from Jesus himself...a message with lasting implications for us today.

While in exile on the Isle of Patmos, the Apostle John was given a preview of the future. That glimpse ahead was written down and became what we call the book of Revelation. Here, the Jesus who will one day return to earth is depicted in power and glory, and we find in this book words from Jesus to seven churches of the first century.

Sooner or later, the government will tell us to do something we cannot do as Christians. Or, they'll prohibit us from doing things we must do as believers. While we have a clear obligation to both church and state, how do we handle the conflicts that inevitably arise? Today: some light for the dark days that may be ahead.

Just as no two snowflakes are alike, no two people are alike. We are all different, and that diversity adds a richness to life. But it also adds a set of problems. When two people don't get along, even two Christians, what do you do? Today: a solution for those difficult people in your life, and mine.
