Passing the Baton

July 4, 2010
In a relay race, each runner must pass a baton to the next runner to avoid disqualification.   In a culture, each generation must, as it were, pass the baton to the next to preserve that culture’s values.  In America, we are now at great risk of failing to pass the baton, and of losing the values on which this country was founded.   The generation now emerging may well be the generation that forgot God.

The Bible tells of a future day when nations will be separated into two groups by Christ Himself. Those nations at his right hand, the sheep, enter into His kingdom, while those on His left, the goats, enter eternal judgment. What is this judgment of the nations all about?

When Jesus taught His followers to pray, He began with “Our Father.” For believers, the fatherhood of God is our source of security and care, and the example we should follow in raising our own families.

We who live in America once thought we were isolated from the calamities that befall other countries. Protected between two oceans, we used to feel safe, then 9/11 hit. Now we realize that danger lurks at our doorstep as well. So what is God’s plan for the land of the free and the home of the brave?

In the book of Revelation we see terrible images of widespread pestilence and death as God brings judgment on a disobedient human race. The Bible tells us that these events are the outpouring of the wrath of God. Today, we will come to grips with the meaning of God’s wrath, and why it is so crucial to seek His mercy while there is still time.

Some would look at the state of the world and think that no one was in charge. As nations threaten other nations, wars break out. Alliances are made and broken, the UN is mired in corruption, and American foreign policy is continually adapting to new realities on the ground. At times, it seems chaos is the only constant.

Where would any of us be without our mothers? To them we owe not only our lives, but the heritage they left for us to follow. For many, that heritage is a godly one, and those whose mothers gave such a heritage are blessed indeed.

When you love someone totally, you'll give all you have to prove that love. In John chapter 12, Mary of Bethany anointed the feet of Jesus with costly oil and then wiped His feet with her hair. Her pure love for the Savior is an example of the kind of devotion we all should have to the Christ who redeemed us.

In John chapter 4 we have a remarkable account of Jesus meeting a Samaritan woman. The encounter was life-changing, and shows us the compassion Jesus had for the women of His day. This immoral woman came from a despised ethnic group. Yet she was among the first to whom Jesus revealed His role as Messiah.
