When a potter throws clay on his wheel, that clay has no choice about what it's going to become. Its job: to sit there and be shaped. Seeing ourselves as clay helps us avoid the "I'm in charge" attitude we all too often have. As the Potter, God's in charge. He has a purpose we cannot see, a purpose that will take us through the fire so that, one day, we'll come out as gold.

When Jesus appeared among the people of Israel, God had a face people could safely see. In the Old Testament, no man could look upon God and live. But now, those who looked into the eyes of Jesus saw the one who said, "He who has seen me has seen the Father." Today, we conclude a brief series on coming face to face with God. Stay with us.

When you want to connect with someone, nothing beats a face-to-face meeting. The Bible uses the picture of God's face in several ways to picture how He communicates with mankind. Once it became clear that Jesus could heal sickness and infirmity, word spread rapidly. One paralyzed man was fortunate in having able-bodied friends who could lower him from an opened roof right in front of Jesus. Their faith, and the subsequent miracle of healing that followed, caused the fame of Jesus to spread even faster.

The mission of Jesus on earth had many components. The Lord knew that after His sacrificial death there would be a need for people to carry on His ministry and carry forth His message of the kingdom of God. So He called 12 men from different walks of life to be His followers. And when He called, they immediately dropped what they were doing.
