Judging False Prophets

July 22, 2007
The Bible warns us that false teachers would arise in the last days. Whether we are in those last days or not, there are false teachers and false teachings everywhere, broadcast on radio and TV and proclaimed from our pulpits. Now, more that ever, we have got to face the issue of discerning truth from error. Today: you will learn about a framework for judging what you hear.

Christian belief is by no means monolithic. There are hundreds of denominations, creeds, and statements of faith to choose from. How do we know what is true, what is only half-true, and what is false? Some say, "Forget doctrine…just love one another." Clearly, we need guidance to help us sort out what to believe.

Whenever we seek to exercise discernment of the beliefs and actions of others, people are quick to quote the words of Jesus that we should not judge, lest we be judged. Obviously, to not judge at all means that anything goes. Today, you will hear a message that clarifies what Jesus meant when he spoke in Matthew chapter 7.

Today's prevailing wisdom says we have no right to judge anyone's lifestyle or beliefs. Those who demand tolerance are very intolerant of those who seek to discern what is right and wrong from God's point of view. In a day rife with counterfeit truths, we must learn to distinguish between truths, half-truths, and lies. Today, we begin a series on discernment: rightly evaluating the doctrine, teaching, conduct and character of others, and doing so in a way that honors God.

Think of living in Iraq, a land struggling to emerge from a generation of despotism. Gunfire and terror are the tools of those resisting the change from oppression to freedom. Fear is the common denominator for the average Iraqi. Americans felt that fear on 9/11, and they may feel it again if terrorists strike on our soil in the days ahead. How should a Christian face the uncertain days that lie before us? Today, a ringing call to rely on God, no matter what comes our way.

Jeremiah wrote, "Blessed are those who trust in the Lord...they shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream." He also writes, "Cursed are those...who make mere flesh their strength...they shall be like a shrub in the desert." Are you living in the desert, thirsty but finding no water? If your life is barren, stay with us.

When you read the papers, it seems evil is winning every battle, and the cause of Christ is on the rocks. Our media is filled with scandal and our celebrities vilify Godly morality. Yet we who name the name of Jesus have no need to lose our confidence. Unseen by the world's media is a church growing at an exponential rate. Today: why you and I should take heart: God is still on His throne.

When you love someone totally, you'll give all you have to prove that love. In John chapter 12, Mary of Bethany anointed the feet of Jesus with costly oil and then wiped His feet with her hair. Her pure love for the Savior is an example of the kind of devotion we all should have to the Christ who redeemed us.
