Jesus, Tried For Us (For Us)

In a just world, the court system exists to examine facts and determine the guilt or innocence of a person on trial. But this is not a just world. All too often, staged trials are held with predetermined outcomes. After Jesus was arrested, he went before several so-called courts in rapid succession. He endured these trials for one reason: that He might give His life for us.

The Bible tells us to “remember the Lord’s death until He comes.” We do this every year during Holy Week, and, every time we join together for The Lord’s Supper. His death paid the price for our sins, a death we’ll commemorate throughout eternity. What He did during those last fateful days was done for us - undeserving sinners. May we be reminded of how far God went so that we might be redeemed.

It’s human nature to want to be in control and to manipulate circumstances in our favor. The Old Testament patriarch Jacob was a schemer who sought to gain every advantage he could. It took a dramatic intervention in his life for him to realize that God was in control, and not himself. The lesson he learned is our lesson to learn as well.

Like everyone else, Christians are drowning in a sea of moral impurity. Peer pressure makes young people text all day long. Social media is replacing face-to-face communication. Our addiction to technology and the rapid breakdown in morality go hand in hand. Yet the grace of God gives us a way out of this mess.
