Jesus, Raised For Us

April 4, 2010
Death is our greatest enemy. It is very final. Nothing in medical science can re-animate dead tissue. When Jesus was crucified by Romans, he died at the hands of men who were very good at making sure a man was dead. Soldiers guarded the tomb to make sure he stayed dead. Nonetheless, nothing could withstand the power of God as He brought His Son back to life in brilliant glory...For Us.

The place is called Skull Hill. Located outside ancient Jerusalem's walls, this was the place of execution. Only common criminals were crucified, and that's how Jesus was treated once condemned by the Romans at the urging of the Jewish leadership. He could have called legions of angels to destroy His oppressors, but went willingly to that cross "For Us". Today we will relive the greatest act of love ever performed on this earth.

In a perfect world, the court system exists to examine facts and determine the guilt or innocence of a person on trial. But this is not a perfect world. All too often show trials are held with predetermined outcomes. After Jesus was arrested, he went before several so-called courts in rapid succession. He went through them for one reason, that He might give His life "For Us."

When Judas gave Jesus that fateful kiss, he was aiding those who wanted to kill the Son of God. In putting him to death, the enemies of Christ unwittingly made our redemption possible. Today, we continue a series simply called "For Us."

The Bible tells us to "remember the Lord's death until He comes." We do this every year during Holy Week, and, every time we join together for The Lord's Supper. His death paid the price for our sins, a death we'll commemorate throughout eternity. What He did during those last fateful days was done for us...undeserving sinners. Today, we begin a series simply called "For Us" and we hope you'll be reminded of how far God went so that we might be redeemed.

The scientific method involves experimentation and the validation of results. Since there's no way to re-enact the moment of creation, this won't work. Science must give way to faith, and that troubles many: people who've adopted evolution, an issue that's carved a great divide between those who believe the Bible and those who scorn it. Today: we'll hear God speak from the pages of Job on how everything really came to be.

For Darwin's followers, there was no Eden. Primitive man rose up by pure chance from the primeval slime, and, here we are. The Bible gives an account with no chances. God hand-made the first human man and woman, and gave them a place to live with a mandate to serve Him as custodians of the earth. While the world celebrates Darwin's theories, believers know that it was God, not chance, that brought male and female together.
