God and the United States

June 13, 2010
We who live in America once thought we were isolated from the calamities that befall other countries. Protected between two oceans, we used to feel safe, then 9/11 hit. Now we realize that danger lurks at our doorstep as well. So what is God’s plan for the land of the free and the home of the brave?

In the book of Revelation we see terrible images of widespread pestilence and death as God brings judgment on a disobedient human race. The Bible tells us that these events are the outpouring of the wrath of God. Today, we will come to grips with the meaning of God’s wrath, and why it is so crucial to seek His mercy while there is still time.

Some would look at the state of the world and think that no one was in charge. As nations threaten other nations, wars break out. Alliances are made and broken, the UN is mired in corruption, and American foreign policy is continually adapting to new realities on the ground. At times, it seems chaos is the only constant.

Where would any of us be without our mothers? To them we owe not only our lives, but the heritage they left for us to follow. For many, that heritage is a godly one, and those whose mothers gave such a heritage are blessed indeed.

When you love someone totally, you'll give all you have to prove that love. In John chapter 12, Mary of Bethany anointed the feet of Jesus with costly oil and then wiped His feet with her hair. Her pure love for the Savior is an example of the kind of devotion we all should have to the Christ who redeemed us.

In John chapter 4 we have a remarkable account of Jesus meeting a Samaritan woman. The encounter was life-changing, and shows us the compassion Jesus had for the women of His day. This immoral woman came from a despised ethnic group. Yet she was among the first to whom Jesus revealed His role as Messiah.

In many religions, women are relegated to near slavery. They fared better in Jewish society in New Testament times, but were still thought of as less than men. Things changed when Jesus came on the scene. He treated women with respect and dignity, providing a role model for all men to follow.

When you read the papers, it seems evil is winning every battle, and the cause of Christ is on the rocks. Our media is filled with scandal and our celebrities vilify godly morality. Yet we who name the name of Jesus have no need to lose our confidence. Unseen by the world's media is a church growing at an exponential rate. Today: why you and I should take heart: God is still on His throne.

Death is our greatest enemy. It is very final. Nothing in medical science can re-animate dead tissue. When Jesus was crucified by Romans, he died at the hands of men who were very good at making sure a man was dead. Soldiers guarded the tomb to make sure he stayed dead. Nonetheless, nothing could withstand the power of God as He brought His Son back to life in brilliant glory...For Us.
