Death To Self-Justification (Brokenness)

September 25, 2016

Some believers will only obey God after He teaches them a lesson the hard way. Jonah finally went to Nineveh, a little worse for wear, after three days inside a fish. Even then, the prophet of God was not happy that wicked Ninevites might repent. He might be going, but deep down, he was still unwilling.

Ask a farmer and he’ll tell you that mules can be stubborn. But none of God’s creation is as stubborn as mankind. Amazingly, even redeemed men and women try to resist His will. Let’s meet a prophet of God who was as stubborn as a mule.

Farmers know it’s really pretty simple: no seeds, no plants. No plants, no harvest. God set the laws of sowing and reaping in motion a long time ago. But these laws that govern agriculture also apply to financial giving. Paul talked about this in his writings to the church at Corinth.

Wise money managers know the term ROI:  return on investment–the bottom line when putting cash at risk. Christians have bank accounts on earth, but also accounts in heaven. They lay up treasures “where moth and rust do not corrupt.”

When a wealthy benefactor drops a few million on a college, it’s always big news. But no one seems to notice a poor person giving a quarter to someone else in need. That is, no one but Jesus. His keen eye saw a lady entering the temple courts one day in Jerusalem. Will God ever commend you, like this woman, for giving all you have?

In a weakening economy, it’s easy to reduce our giving to the work of God. Many whose jobs are in jeopardy are burdened with debt at the same time. So, what should we do? Let’s learn how to honor the Lord no matter how empty our wallets are! The key is to realize that our use of money is one way in which we worship God.

The Word of God has been given to believers in two forms. We have the written Word in the Bible, but we also have the Word made flesh, as Jesus reveals to us the Father in heaven. He was sent by the Father to change the lives of all who come to Him for salvation.

Does your mind ever wander when you pray? Do you ever wonder what you should actually be praying for? Prayer is not easy. Today we will learn how to pray verses of Scripture back to the God who inspired them, and thereby gain focus and purpose as we come to our Father in heaven.

We make choices every day. We all need guidance on picking the right forks on life’s road. The Bible can give us the guidance we need, and it cautions us concerning the dangers of failing to meditate on the Word of God.
