Come and See His Temptation

March 1, 2009
Some people think that God always leads His children in easy pathways of blessing. In reality, God often leads His people into the wilderness. That was the case with Jesus, who first fasted for forty days and then faced the onslaught of Satan's attacks, all while in the center of God's will. Why was Jesus being tempted of the devil?

No single person has ever had the impact on humanity as that of Jesus Christ. Without technology, political power or military assets, Jesus altered the direction of history, living a perfect life, and then becoming the perfect sacrifice for the sins that separate us from God.

Think of living in a hotbed of terrorism. Fear grips your heart...you never know when the next attack will come. Americans remember the fear they felt in the aftermath of 9-11. That feeling can be very real, and, very debilitating. Now, for many, their fear is one of an uncertain economy, and the possibility of job loss.

There are few things that can burden the soul like suffering from an illness that never seems to improve. Or, finding oneself suddenly disabled, and calling out to God for the healing that seems to be promised in the scriptures. When the healing never comes, a sense of deep disappointment sets in, and many Christians resolve to never pray again, feeling "what's the use?"

We all rejoice when God answers a prayer in a way that's unmistakable. A new job when unemployed, healing from a long disease, reconciliation after years of separation. But there are prayers we can pray for which the answer is "no." The Apostle Paul begged the Lord three times to relieve his thorn in the flesh, and was told that he had to bear it in the sufficient grace of God.

Sometimes we're overwhelmed with calamity, and it seems, when we pray, that God is nowhere to be found. We lose a job...get a foreclosure notice...our health is suddenly at great risk. Despite earnest praying, our situation only gets worse. That was the cry of the prophet Habakkuk, and for many, it's our cry too.

"Ask, and you shall receive, that your joy may be full." This promise of Jesus might lead us to believe that answers to our prayers ought to be the answers we're asking for. But sometimes, God sends answers that have less to do with what we ask and more to do with the relationships with Him that He wants us to have. Please stay with us.

We're all used to having instant coffee, instant internet, and, in general, instant gratification of our desires. When it comes to prayer, though, instant is not usually part of the equation. Many times, years pass before we see an answer to an oft-repeated request before God. How do we come to grips with the need to wait, and wait, and then wait some more?

Your child is sick. You pray for healing, but healing never comes. At your child's funeral, you're left asking "why?" The mystery of prayer is our focus for the next six weeks, as we try to understand the purposes of God when the answers we cry for never come.

In modern culture, people look forward to what they call "the holiday season." All that good cheer translates into lots of dollars in the cash registers. Try to explain that what we now call "the holidays" used to be called Christmas, and then say that Christmas begins with Christ, and you may see a lot of blank stares. Indeed, in today's Christmas you can hardly see Christ at all.

It's hard to imagine a more humble beginning. Born among animals, laid in a feeding trough, in a place far from home. Jesus came into this world without the trappings that normally accompany royalty. The inn was full that night. And even in our day, for most people, there is no room for the Christ of Christmas.
