Pressing Towards the Mark Part 1

February 1, 2021

Today, we return to our series in Philippians where Paul offered some wonderful perspective on the mind of Christ.  We’ll learn today that when you have this mindset, your perspective in life changes.  The old life looks nasty!  We’ll also discover how to experience life at its fullest and be victorious.

Not long ago we turned the calendar and entered into a new year.  As you know at this time of the year, it’s common for people to evaluate what’s important, and make some resolutions.  Today we’re going to see how really important knowing Christ is, and how everything else pales in comparison.

In the world as we know it, people are impressed by college degrees that are hanging on the wall, fame and fortune.  But the apostle Paul sure wasn’t.  You know what mattered to him?  Knowing Christ!  And that’s the place we need to get to, and today’s Light on the Hill will help.

If you want to be good at something, you’ll need to practice.  An accomplished musician, or skilled athlete, didn’t arrive there overnight.  They put in countless hours of practice.  The same holds true when it comes to rejoicing.  It’s not something that comes to us naturally, especially when life gets difficult.  But if we’ll practice… and lean on the Lord… we can get to that place God wants us to be.

Today Pastor James continues his study of Philippians.  You can see it on so many faces today… people are discouraged, angry or distraught.  Joy is noticeably absent in the lives of some.  But as Christians we should stand out as joyful people, even when the circumstances around us are difficult.  We’ll learn today that there’s joy to be found in a relationship with Jesus, and the free gift of salvation that God completed at the Cross.

We are conditioned as Americans to be quick to complain if we aren’t satisfied with a service or product. But the general attitude of being a complaining person can really take over our lives and then, we are known not as joyful Christians, but as grumpy people. Rather than complain about what’s going on, pastor James will encourage us to work out our salvation with fear and trembling. Recognizing it’s God who does the work.

We plan on covering the latter half of Philippians two on this Friday.  Not long ago, we celebrated Christmas, and recalled what Jesus gave up and went through to make our salvation a reality.  Today we’ll see the importance of following our Lord’s example in being obedient, working out our salvation.  Not to be saved, but because we are saved.

When we want to understand the depths of effort Christ went to, to save us, we need to read Philippians chapter two. There Paul seeks to resolve a conflict in the Philippian church, and writes about our Savior’s humility and obedience, traits God wants to produce in us as well. So we will consider the mindset of Christ today on Light on the Hill!

As we continue to fight in this battle we find ourselves in, it’s important that we go about it with the mind of Christ.  To do otherwise, will lead to certain defeat.  But what does this mindset look like, practically speaking?  We’ll address that and more as we take you to Philippians chapter two.

Pastor James Kaddis will pick up where we left off in Philippians chapter one.  Remember this epistle is designed to teach us the mind of Christ.  In other words, the mindset we’re to have as we go about our day.  And as we’ll learn today a big part of is found in the statement, “To live is Christ, and to die is gain.”

Could you possibly offer your principle for life in six words? Paul the Apostle did in his letter to the Philippians. He said, “For me to live is Christ!” Pastor James Kaddis will discuss this and more as he studies Philippians chapter one.  Let’s be encouraged to adopt the mindset of to live is Christ and to die is gain, as we listen in to this our Monday edition of Light on the Hill!
