Galatians 3:19-29 Part 1

February 5, 2020

We’ve been learning recently that we’re made right with God by faith in what Jesus did at the cross on our behalf.  And not by the keeping of the law.  Put another way, salvation is a gift to receive not achieve.  The Judaizers in the region of Galatia, were preaching something far different as we'll discover today.

Have you ever tried to do something that was way out of your league?  Today we’re going to see that many make the mistake of trying to get to heaven by living perfectly.  It simply can’t be done.  But thankfully, someone lived the perfect life for us.  And through faith in Him, the door of heaven swings wide open to us.

How do you relate to God?  Is it based on your performance? Can you be made right by human effort? Does God help those who help themselves? A popular concept to be sure.  But is it the among the greatest misconceptions in the world today?  We’ll get some answers to these important questions on today’s Light on the Hill.

“You’ve got it in you, you can do it!”  Many of us were taught to think that way from an early age.  But when it comes to our salvation, we need to realize we can’t do it, but Jesus did it for us.  We’re talking about how we get to heaven, through trusting in Jesus alone, today on Light on the Hill.

Are you under the impression that you need to be a good person or do a certain amount of good deeds to get to heaven?  Is that true?  A careful study of Galatians two, and the New Covenant of grace, reveals the truth about our salvation!

It’s important at times to be reminded of the core message of the Gospel, and what the foundation of our salvation truly is.  And that’s what we find today in Galatians chapter two.

We’re saved by grace through faith… as Christians we believe that.  But did you realize just as we need grace to start this Christian life, we need God’s grace to grow and live day by day?  Freedom is found as we live by grace and allow the Holy Spirit to empower our lives.  That’s the emphasis of Galatians chapter two and our focus on Light on the Hill.

Today we’ll be finishing up Galatians chapter one.  Having already defined the gospel, the apostle Paul goes on to explain what the origin of this gospel is.  It’s God Himself!  Join us and see how this good news transformed Paul’s life, and can do the same for us!

In Galatians chapter one we run across the Apostle Paul’s testimony.  We’ll notice who he was before he was saved, and can’t help but see the big difference after God got a hold of his life.

When you read a book, perhaps you tend to skip right over the introduction or forward, and get right to the meat of the text!  But when you read Galatians, it’s a good idea to pause and really consider what the greeting from the author has to say to us.  And as you’ll see today on Light on the Hill, there’s much we can glean from it.

Today we open our Bibles to Galatians chapter one.  Having already introduced the epistle earlier this week, we’ll now go through each chapter and verse with you.  Along the way you’ll notice Paul’s personal testimony, a wonderful defense of God’s grace, and then see how that grace can and should be applied to our lives.
