1 Corinthians 13:8-13 Part 2

November 5, 2019

I probably don’t have to convince you that, this side of heaven, there’s a lot that we don’t understand or fully comprehend!  At times we may even wonder what God is up to.  Pastor James is about to show us that we can fully trust the Lord, who knows all things, and has our best interest at heart.  And one day, we will see clearly, when Jesus comes again.

If you’ll recall we’ve been reading about the gifts of the Spirit, and it's interesting that the apostle Paul would speak about love right in the middle of it.  Pastor James believes, that’s no accident.  We’ll see how it’s all connected.  The use of these gifts must be motivated and driven by God’s love for us.

Been to a wedding ceremony this year?  If so, it’s quite likely you heard someone recite or give reference to First Corinthians thirteen.  It’s often referred to as the love chapter.  Today on Light on the Hill pastor James Kaddis sets out to answer the questions, what is love and what does it look like in our lives?

We are making our way through First Corinthians, and we’ve reached chapter thirteen.  Before we get into what it has to say about love, pastor James Kaddis will set the stage by making the connection to our calling in life.

From God’s viewpoint each gifting and calling is important and necessary.  He will reward one day based on our faithfulness to our calling, not on what the gift is.  Today on Light on the Hill join us in First Corinthians twelve as pastor James Kaddis focuses on verses 18-27.

Do you consider yourself to be an integral part of the Body of Christ? God does! In our study today, the apostle Paul explains the significance of the Body of Christ working together as one.  As an analogy, he points to the human body which has many parts, but is to effectively function as one unit.

Whether you realize it or not if you’re a Christian you are gifted by God!  But perhaps you’re not really sure what gifts you’ve been given or where you fit in.  Today on Light on the Hill pastor James Kaddis continues a fascinating look at the spiritual gifts we find listed in First Corinthians twelve.

If you’ve ever had any questions concerning spiritual gifts, you picked the right day to tune in because that’s what we’ll be discussing today and in the days ahead. First Corinthians twelve is one of a few spots in the Scripture where the gifts are laid out for us.

In First Corinthians eleven the subject of head coverings comes up.  There were some women in the church at Corinth who chose not to wear head coverings and this caused quite a stir.  Here we are centuries later and obviously that’s no longer a cultural norm.  So do we toss this passage out thinking it no longer applies?  Actually pastor James Kaddis says it has something very important to say to us.

The Jewish customs in the apostle Paul’s day were quite a bit different than what we find in today’s culture. For example, they couldn’t uncover their heads in public because it was dishonoring to their husband.  Tucked within this are some lessons which are timeless.  Pastor James Kaddis will point out the divine order that God has set into place in the church, and is quick to point out that this doesn’t imply that women are inferior or less capable than men.

As believers, we know that we have an incredible amount of freedom. But, there are some things that while they may be permissible, have the potential to stumble a brother or sister in the Lord or even mislead an unbeliever!  The apostle Paul said that all things are permissible, but not all things are helpful.  Today on Light on the Hill we’re urged to keep our focus on the glory of God.  And pastor James Kaddis says just as Paul had some limitations on his liberties, so too should we.
