The Struggle of the Flesh
1 Corinthians 9:24-27
The flesh can be frightfully deceptive. Have you ever known someone who seemed "together" on the outside while, in truth, he was a moral wreck on the inside? Such people may know all the right things to do and say but nevertheless lead lives geared toward the flesh.
It's not surprising, then, that many self-centered believers can seem to be working for the Lord, even though they are primarily focused on their own goals and desires. The only cure for this type of self-absorbed living is complete dependence upon the Holy Spirit in every area of life. How do we walk by the Spirit?
First, we must practice persuasion. We must be completely convinced that we cannot live the godly life apart from the Holy Spirit. Remember, the flesh cannot be changed; rather, it must be totally replaced by the Spirit.
Second, we must surrender. Knowing the truth and doing the truth are two separate things. Once you recognize your need for the Spirit, you must bring your whole life to Him in genuine surrender.
Third, we must trust the Lord. We will never fully surrender our lives to Him until we know for sure that He will keep His Word. If there is doubt in your heart about God's love, acceptance, and life-changing power, then your fleshly nature will seek to keep a firm hold on your thoughts, decisions, and actions.
God has a better way of life in store for you. Lay your flesh down at the foot of the Cross today and see what fruit Christ can reap in your life.
