The Assurance of Our Salvation
1 John 5:1-13
As slaves to sin, we were in dire need of rescue. Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves: He paid our ransom through His shed blood. (Matthew 20:28) The moment we accept this liberation, God counts the finished work of Jesus the Messiah on our behalf and adopts us as His children.
Whenever we have doubts about whether we belong to the Father, we can apply these "tests" to remind us of the security we have as members of God's family.
The Word Test - What does Scripture say? "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved" (Acts 16:31). If we accept the Bible as truth, then we will confess Jesus as the only One who can save us; more than that, we will trust the fact that God has made us a permanent part of His family. (1 John 3:1)
The Witness Test - The Holy Spirit's testimony affirms that we are God's children and no longer slaves to fear. A deep, abiding conviction in our spirit confirms the security of our position in Christ. (Romans 8:15-16)
The Walk Test - What do our inner and outer lives reveal? Do we have a growing desire for the things of God? When we belong to Christ, we will become increasingly dissatisfied with our old sinful ways. First, we will experience an inward change - a hunger to know God and please Him-and then an outward transformation that's visible through our words and actions.
God doesn't want you wavering in uncertainty. He has written these things "so that you may know"! (v. 13)
