The Promise Of Christ's Coming Again

December 24, 2021

Throughout the Old Testament, from the very first prophecy to the last, Scripture deals with the coming of the Lord, that is, His return. Even later, when the angel announced His birth, there was mention of Christ coming back to this earth.

In this message, Dr. Stanley shows how the promise of Christ’s coming is a vital part of God’s redemptive plan and why that promise should remain in the forefront of every believer’s mind. Dr. Stanley points out that Jesus was more concerned in giving His disciples the details of His return than He was in providing details about His death.

As we eagerly anticipate the Lord’s return, we need to continue living productively for Him.

All of us have a need for peace in our minds and hearts. Jesus went through life displaying the kind of peace God intends for us to have. But He tells us that there is no peace to be found as long as we act independently of the will of God. Dr. Stanley explains that true, genuine peace can only be made through the blood Jesus poured out on the cross. He warns against being deceived by a false sense of peace. When a follower of Christ finally knows that he has God’s true peace, nothing can alter that inner sense of quietness and stillness in his spirit. The source of true peace is a personal, intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Surrender yourself to Him and you will have peace that passes all human understanding.

Two thousand years ago, Christ fulfilled all the signs and predictions in the Old Testament about the first coming of the Messiah. Dr. Stanley explains that the main reason Christ came was to make our lives complete. If Jesus Christ had not come to pay the penalty due for our sins, we would have had to pay it ourselves, because all of us have sinned against Him. The second purpose for Christ’s coming was to reveal the true nature of the Father. Christ was, in fact, God walking in human flesh. If we want to see an accurate picture of God, we must look to Jesus.

Recognizing our role in God’s plan as people who have been ransomed and redeemed with a great price impresses on us the truth that our own efforts will never be enough to save us. The gift of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ is incredibly humbling. But the dearness of our Savior is our joy.

As we prepare for Christ’s coming, what are our responsibilities as followers of Jesus? Dr. Stanley asks listeners to share their testimonies with those who don’t believe. As we await Christ’s return, Scripture promises us peace if we will give God our worries and trust in Him. Regardless of the timing of Christ’s return, every believer should actively serve the Lord here and now. We never retire from working for God. And as we serve Him joyfully, we should gather at church to encourage and pray for each other, and to exalt the Lord together. That attitude of worship should characterize our lives the rest of the week, too.

What is meant by the phrase "living in the power of the Holy Spirit?" Is this power limited to certain people like pastors, evangelists and missionaries, or is it available to everyone? It is important that we understand the ministry of the Holy Spirit and that we understand what the Bible says about Him.
