Real Freedom - Part 1

July 4, 2022

We usually associate the word “freedom” with the right to live as we please and pursue our ambitions and dreams. However, Jesus spoke of a deeper aspect of freedom that pertains to the state of our souls. God wants to free us from every internal form of bondage that prevents us from becoming the person He created us to be. This kind of freedom is not achieved by war and revolution but by the knowledge of truth. Jesus said, “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free” (John 8:31-32).

Dr. Stanley talks about what holds us back from experiencing true freedom and how Jesus can overcome those hindrances. Discover the blessings of living in the liberty Christ provides.

Are you trusting in Jesus or your good works? Dr. Stanley concludes his examination of Paul’s letter to the Galatians as he guides us through Galatians 6:16-17. In his final words to the Galatians, Paul asks them to not put any more burdens on him because “I bear on my body the brand marks of Jesus” (Galatians 6:17). Paul realized that his price for knowing Christ was to willingly suffer for Him—and he had suffered enough. Dr. Stanley tells us that obeying God doesn’t mean we won’t have to suffer. There is always a chance we may suffer from knowing Christ and proclaiming His holy name. Thankfully for us, it is through the trials in our lives that we learn who God is and what His will is for our lives.

Are you trusting in Jesus or your good works? Dr. Stanley continues his examination of Paul’s letter to the Galatians as he guides us through Galatians 6:11-18. The heretical teachers in Paul’s time claimed the way to salvation was by submitting to the sacrament of circumcision plus good works. But Paul refutes them by asserting that “neither circumcision means anything nor uncircumcision, but a new creation” (Galatians 6:15). Dr. Stanley reminds us that the only way to salvation is to become newly created, or born again, by our faith in the cross. That’s where the shackles of the law are broken and liberty begins.

Are you trusting in Jesus or your good works? Dr. Stanley continues his examination of Paul’s letter to the Galatians as he guides us through Galatians 5:26-6:10. Paul encourages the Galatians to find unity by exercising their liberty to serve one another. By carrying each other’s burdens, they will live by the Spirit and fulfill the law of Christ. Dr. Stanley cautions that if we are still burdened by the law or trying to gain God’s acceptance, we will have little to give to someone else. But as liberated believers, when we find someone in need and can minister to him, we are obligated to do so.

Are you trusting in Jesus or your good works? Dr. Stanley continues his examination of Paul’s letter to the Galatians as he guides us through Galatians 5:13-26. Paul’s message is that we are all free in Christ—and we have been liberated from the expectations of the law. There is no need to seek His approval because we already have it. But that doesn’t give us license to do anything we want. Liberty has its limitations. We cannot use it as an opportunity to fit our fleshly desires. Instead, we are still obliged to do the things that will honor God, like giving our love and service to others.

Are you trusting in Jesus or your good works? Dr. Stanley continues his examination of Paul’s letter to the Galatians as he guides us through Galatians 5:1-15. Paul states that living up to the expectations of the law was actually breaking the spirit of believers. He warned the people of Galatia that if they didn’t stand firm in their liberty, they would drift back into the bondage of law. The only requirement of Christ is that we submit to His will as we walk in faith.
