Dr. Stanley elaborates on what kind of enemy we are dealing with—Satan. Knowing he cannot touch the spirit of believers, the devil attempts to render us useless before God through lies and deception. So how can we become victorious over satanic attacks? By submitting to the Holy Spirit who lives within us.

Peter tells the church elders to eagerly shepherd the flock of God according to His will and not out of compulsion. Dr. Stanley talks about how the role of pastor, or undershepherd, came to be. He then gives us a clear understanding of what a pastor’s motivation and manner of conduct must be and how he must serve in today’s church.

Dr. Stanley tells us that we are to love others by making allowances for their mistakes, their sins toward us, and the things they say and do against us. When we choose to love someone, we are equipped and motivated to reach out and help them. Committed service is how we become good stewards of the grace of God.

Peter encourages his readers to be ready to suffer for righteousness. He tells them that even if their persecution results in sacrificing their lives as Christ did, God—their judge—will honor and reward them in heaven. Peter commands them to arm themselves by adopting the attitude of Christ. Dr. Stanley reminds us that Christ suffered not for doing what was wrong, but for doing what was right. As a result, His crucifixion freed us from the power of sin. With this incredible burden lifted, we can now concentrate on following Christ’s will for our lives rather than on our own needs. As we build momentum in the work of conquering sin, we become more spiritually mature.

The only person who could have died for our sin is a sinless person. That disqualifies everyone except Jesus. Only He could still remain God and pay the penalty of our sin to bring us to God. Dr. Stanley tells us that redemptive suffering does not gain us forgiveness for our sin. Forgiveness results from God’s grace, freely given through Christ, which cannot be earned. God is ready, willing, and able to bring us to Him. He’s done everything he can through Christ’s resurrection. But it is now up to us to receive Him by faithfully following what He says. One act of obedience to God is to be baptized. It helps us recognize that when Christ died, we died. When He was buried, we were buried. And when He arose, we arose.

Peter instructed believers so that when persecution came, they’d know how to respond. Dr. Stanley says we should not be intimidated when we face adversity. Since we are born again, nobody can harm our godly spirits, no matter what may happen to us. It is the presence of God and His blessing that enable us to be confident, enthusiastic, committed, and engaged in the Lord’s work. We should be ready to give an account for the hope and faith we have. And we should be able to do so with a clear conscience. If someone were to ask you why you are a Christian, how would you respond?

Are you compassionate toward those around you? Are you truly sensitive to them and their needs? Peter encouraged the believers in his day to act out who they really were, even when they were under persecution. He told them that to relate to others, they should do so with a Christian conduct. Dr. Stanley details five characteristics that Peter says can help build strong Christian relationships. Since we have the Spirit of God within us, we ought to be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit. When others mistreat us, we should not respond with vengeance but look for a reason to bless them instead. What you say and how you act have more impact on your testimony than you might imagine.
