Are you trusting in Jesus or your good works? Dr. Stanley continues his examination of Paul’s letter to the Galatians as he guides us through Galatians 3:1-5. Paul admonishes the Galatians for caving in to the Jewish doctrine of works. He asks how anyone who had witnessed Christ’s resurrection could still support legalism as a means to salvation? Wouldn’t that nullify the grace of God and the Spirit within us? Dr. Stanley asks us the same question: Is God blessing us for trying to live up to self-imposed expectations, someone else’s standards, or the Ten Commandments? The answer is no. He points out that even Abraham couldn’t win God’s favor by doing the works of the law. Why? Because there was no law to keep. It was solely by his act of faith in taking God at His word. Are you striving for sanctification by works or by faith?

Paul grew up as a devout Jew and tried to obey every aspect of the Mosaic law. But he soon realized his futility, never being able to do for himself what Christ did for all of us on the cross. Paul freed himself from bondage by turning to Jesus in faith, through what he called “being crucified with Christ.” Dr. Stanley tells us that any time man creates laws that must be obeyed in order to find God’s favor, he attempts to add to what Christ already did—therefore diminishing God. Paul said in Galatians 2:21, “If righteousness comes through the Law, then Christ died needlessly.” When we accept Jesus Christ by faith alone, we invite Him to live His life in and through us.

We can’t disappoint God because He has no expectation of us. We don’t even need His approval because we already have it. Dr. Stanley states that most of us are still seeking liberation, even after God has freed us and accepted us as His own. We continue to remain in bondage to the laws and principles that never came from God. The good news is, once we have received Christ as our Savior, God declares that we are accepted in Him. This justification by faith means we do not have to earn His approval.

Many Jews believed that Gentiles could only be saved by accepting the Mosaic law. This put Peter and Paul in conflict because, during a meeting in Antioch, Peter sided with the Jews. Dr. Stanley addresses this confrontation and recognizes that conflict is all around us. Attempting to resolve a conflict in a godly manner often results in blessings to the victim and the persecutor alike. Ultimately, our response is our responsibility.

The people of Galatia were confused about how they were to be accepted by God. Paul preached that men are saved by faith, while false teachers said that salvation comes by adhering to the law of Moses. Paul boldly builds his case by first convincing the church that his gospel came to Him from God, not man. Therefore, to reject him was to reject God. Dr. Stanley says the same issue of authority is with us today. Without a foundation in God’s Word, we are bound to fall into false teaching. Any system that subverts the grace of God through faith and love is contrary to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Dr. Charles F. Stanley was the senior pastor of First Baptist Church Atlanta for more than fifty years. He was also the founder of In Touch Ministries and a New York Times best-selling author, who wrote more than seventy books encouraging people to seek Jesus as their Savior and know Him as their wise and loving Lord. 

Known to audiences around the world through his wide-reaching TV and radio broadcasts, Stanley modeled his 65 years of ministry after the apostle Paul’s message in Acts 20:24: “Life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God’s mighty kindness and love.”
