What is that inner voice saying, and what am I hearing? Do I talk myself into despondency? Guilt? Failure? Is that inner voice talking lies, or truth? Somebody is always talking, whether it be self or the devil. But hopefully the Word of God is talking.

Paul said in Philippians 4 that in every state he had learned to be content. It is an unfolding mystery. The great teacher or barometer of contentment is the dead-end street of discontentment.

In the subtlety of Spiritual Warfare we understand that our adversary roars as a hungry lion (1 Peter 5:8), yet the roar is usually a whisper, a quiet inclination towards a thought that is always based on a lie against truth. It may even be factual, but not full of truth. His lies may be factual in our experience, but lie against the truth of our exalted position. Thus the devil loves not just to put things in our minds, but to also keep things out!
