Anyone who sets out on a path to follow God will undoubtedly run across many escape routes and other paths, paths of logic, worldly aspiration, the path back from which I had turned! This passage has the story of 3 people that came to the door of discipleship and allowed another voice to take precedence over the voice of a deeper call.

Discipleship is one of the great themes of the New Testament. It represents the life transformed from self-orientation, to one of a deep God conscience. It is a life that contrasts weakness and power, fervency and apathy, divine love or human love.

If Christ is not that 'point of Reference' in my life, then nothing in my Christian life will work properly. Christ's life and its fruits in my life all come to a screeching halt. If I am not interacting with Christ, I will be interacting with something else.

From your perspective, what is the goal of your Christian life? What is it from God's prospective? All too often we have certain goals we attempt to attain in our walk with God such as spiritual consistency, a deliverance from some mental quagmire, or from some unwanted destructive vice. Our faith is not a pursuit or a attainment, it is a relationship, a love relationship, it is in the relationship itself that all the desires are fulfilled.

Today most believers - though saved and kept by Grace - still live in at least internal legal premises, often performing outward acts gained at earning God's approval. We have been given the right of partaking in Christ's relationship with the Gospel.
