Grace Thoughts

Tim Kelley

My Portion Oh Lord, Part 1

August 7, 2012
The writer of this Psalm spoke consistently of his afflictions and trials - evil people and their impact on his life. He came to the conclusion that his great hope and joy had to go beyond earthly pleasure and relationships.

Being “renewed” is a supernatural process of transforming the Christian from a life of self-consciousness to one who is transformed into a Christ like image. This process begins internally and works its way out to the external.

We see in this passage a battle Paul speaks of, his battle with sin and its indwelling nature. To give it a more modern term—Paul was consumed with Self Consciousness. The Word of God had an inner man ministry to the author of this Psalm. It quieted his heart and brought a calm into the soul. The word had an imprint on his soul - it was inscribed on his heart.

A soldier in the fog of war only knows the battle he is in at the moment, not the entire strategic plan the General has. Calming the mind, disengaging self, stepping back and getting to the foundational thoughts - this is what the Psalmist is doing. What he is facing is consuming, he must go beyond the obvious, the thunderstorm, and see the Sun again.

One of our biggest challenges in practical Christian life is to simply slow our thinking down. We are consistently being challenged by life to interpret it by the moment and by the circumstance, not the bigger picture.

I make a great mistake when I interpret my circumstances as relevant to God’s thoughts about me. Our lives will often be marred with sometimes inexplicable suffering and circumstances. There is little good to find; God doesn’t seem to care about His own plan! And even though I have done my best, maybe, to honor Him - it seems as though I am under His hand of chastisement.

In any consistent teaching on the Grace of God it is important to understand that God’s Grace has a plan of transformation for your life. This is an inner life transformation, causing you to be not only conformed in your outward life style and actions, but more importantly, transformed internally. Transformed in the place no one can see - where we become finished work believers inwardly.

About Tim Kelley

Tim Kelley, at the age of 18, surrendered his life and heart to Jesus Christ. After receiving his degree in Biblical Studies, he relocated to St. Petersburg, Florida. In July of 1989 he became the senior pastor of Grace Connection Church and launched a local radio broadcast called “Grace Thoughts”, a daily radio program broadcast in the Tampa Bay region http://wtis1110.com/ and is now heard at www.oneplace.com. Pastor Kelley is now in his 33th year in public ministry here in the Tampa Bay area. He is an avid sports fan of the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, and the Boston Celtics. As you may have guessed, our pastor grew up in New England in the Plymouth Mass. area. Pastor Kelley’s two greatest and heartfelt passions are teaching and preaching a clear gospel of God’s grace and its impact in our daily lives, as well as his love and compassion for people (even if they are not New England Fans).  Pastor Kelley has a Master’s Degree in Biblical Studies and is currently pursuing a second Masters in Counseling, graduating in May 2013.  He is happily married to his beautiful wife of 27 years, Peggy. They have one child at home, Sadie Lynne.  Their beautiful daughter Hannah Grace, in February 2012, went home to be with the Lord, due to a firearm mishap after a church service. Pastor Kelley and Peggy have started the Hannah Grace Foundation in memory of their daughter, which raises funds for the housing, care and education of children and young adults, here locally in the Tampa Bay region, throughout America as well as the third world.
