In the subtlety of Spiritual Warfare we understand that our adversary roars as a hungry lion (1 Peter 5:8), yet the roar is usually a whisper, a quiet inclination towards a thought that is always based on a lie against truth. It may even be factual, but not full of truth. His lies may be factual in our experience, but lie against the truth of our exalted position. Thus the devil loves not just to put things in our minds, but to also keep things out!

David in this account was physically weary from travel and emotionally drained because of his son Absalom’s rebellion - when he was confronted by an angry embittered man. David displayed a quality that would wipe out most ministry personnel problems, marital issues, emotional stress and consistent self-justification. It could heal broken families; it could cure those afflicted with the disease of victimhood. It can start those who have spiritually stalled. Without this internal quality, spiritual transformation will be muted at best. David in our text reveals the great quality of meekness.

Age does not guarantee wisdom; it sometimes can freeze people into a self-based opinion. But when you find one who has lived much, suffered much, failed much and faced deep spiritual confusions, when you find one who would prefer to be quiet than to offer words - that's who you want to listen to. David, now at the end of his life, leaves us this Psalm. Full of the wisdom and values extracted from great pain and great blessing, great defeats and great victories, as well as, great spiritual mountain tops and the deep valley of personal failure.
