Oscars 2021—Hollywood RIP - Islands of Culture

May 4, 2021

"Turn out the lights, the party's over." For what may be our last foray into a dying culture, we visit the 93rd Academy Awards for Motion Pictures in 2020. We read the eulogy of Western culture once more. Yet, shades of Christ and echoes of a Christian era still linger even in the last films to receive the tarnished awards in that non-celebratory celebration. As Western culture continues its destructive path, will islands of culture form in the monasteries of the new dark age?

Will the president's unprecedented $4 trillion plus $1.9 trillion plan to bring in free preschool and free college, and other womb-to-tomb bennies bankrupt the nation? Or will this be the slow drain on a once prosperous nation? The effects of envy are always destructive. The intent on the part of the left to tax capital or destroy capital will put a squeeze on the middle class. At first glance, Christians see the "soak the rich" strategy as a wonderful form of funding irresponsible government, the Scriptures condemn such legalized plunder. We discuss the biblical view of wealth on this edition of the program.

Does God's commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves require that we get an immunization shot for COVID? A recent poll found most American Christians say "Yes" to that. If we were to love our neighbor, what would we say about the 1,500,000 deaths that are self-inflicted each year? And when it comes to the golden rule, we point out that three is some bit of subjectiveness and some limitation of knowledge as to what would produce good for ourselves and our neighbors. Thus, shall we provide some liberty for our neighbors on decisions like the mRNA shot?

The great bane and root source of apostasy for the Christian church is always traced back to the liberal college faculty in Christian colleges. From whence is the tension between the faculty and the more conservative boards of these Christian colleges? Red-state parents send their kids to blue colleges, and they always turn out blue. But why? Can the Christian college be fixed, or is the entire system programmed to a bad end? What about education majors? Psychology majors? Sociology majors? Where did these come from?

We add up the carbon dioxide produced by the oil used to build car batteries for one electric car plus the coal burn required to power the thing for 100,000 miles. In total, the electric car produces twice the carbon dioxide as a gas-powered car. But what if carbon dioxide was good for plants, producing a greener planet? What about that? Should Christians be concerned about the efforts to raise the price of energy by two to four times on the part of governments which are running nations into bankruptcy?

The prevalence of children wandering away from the church and the faith brings up a question. We address this question taken up by Pastor John Piper: "Why have kids if they might wind up in hell?" Children are a faith challenge, perhaps the most intensive faith challenge to parents in an apostate age. Are you ready for this challenge, and will you hold to the covenant promises of God? We interact with Pastor John's answer to the question here.

At least 92% of abortions are now done by kill pills or other means in secret. But God is still the Judge of the earth, and ultimate justice does not hinge on the government, pro-life organizations, or any manmade institution. Inevitably, the great leaders of the modern revolutions are ground up into their own machines, and Margaret Sanger is no exception to the rule.

By common grace, the remnants of Western culture has been extended a few more years. Queens Victoria and Elizabeth II served preserving elements for Western culture, but that’s almost over now. Prince Charles, William, and Harry mark the end of an era. We draw a distinction between conservative culture/morality and real Christian faith. This is vitally important when considering literature for your kids—including “The Secret Garden,” “Under the Lilacs,” and Jane Austen.

Kevin Swanson and Bill Jack discuss the need to bring a Biblical worldview to bear on every area of life and the importance of Christian discipleship in our children's lives. They also discuss the best routes for them as they grow up in the middle of this evil age.

Pressures are increasing worldwide on Christians—in the East, the South, and the West. Pressures from governments, from anarchical bands, from communities, and from increased impoverishment. How can the West learn from the East? What happens when a bomb goes off in your church, or when the pastor receives death threats? How does the church react, and how does it recover from persecution?
