Ep. 137: Graduation
Dr. Kevin Head: Hi friends, welcome back to Reimining Our Faith. I hope you had a wonderful weekend. May is such a busy month. Days are getting longer, outdoor activities are picking up, school is moving to an end for another year, summer vacations are being planned, and for many, May is also a time for graduations.
Today I'm reminded of the words of the writer of Proverbs, who wrote in chapter 3 verse 6: "In all your ways acknowledge God, and God will make your paths straight." Every graduation is a milestone, but it's also a crossroads. There's excitement, possibility, and if we're honest, a bit of uncertainty. What comes next? Will I make the right choices? Am I ready for what comes?
This verse in Proverbs reminds us that God isn't asking graduates to have every step mapped out. God is simply asking for trust. When we acknowledge God, not just in the big decisions but in the daily ones, then God promises to guide our pathways. Not always with a spotlight, maybe not always as clearly as we might wish, but often with a steady, quiet nudge that points us in the right direction.
Whether you're graduating or cheering on someone who is graduating, or maybe just reflecting on your own times of graduation, remember this: God is already in the next season of your life. God is not waiting to see how things turn out. Instead, God is preparing the way, shaping opportunities, and strengthening you for what's ahead.
This month, May, is a great time to pause, to reflect on what God has done in our lives in the past, and also to think about what God is planning for us in the future. Here's something you might want to try. Write down one area of your future that feels uncertain. As you do, write down all of your feelings too. Write down your worries, your anxieties, your concerns, your frustrations, even your excitement.
Whatever it is that you're feeling, include all of your feelings and emotions as you write about this one area of your future life that feels uncertain. Then, once you've got it all down on paper, pray specifically over everything you wrote. Ask God to guide your next step—not the whole journey, just the next one that lies right in front of you.
If you're uncertain, ask God to reveal that next step to you. As we go to graduations, celebrate with graduates, or just see graduates this month, thank God for the opportunity we have in life to step into new chapters. Ask God today to guide and direct your ways as you acknowledge Him and trust Him to make your path straight and help you reimagine your faith.
