Receive God's Grace Graciously Part 1

May 24, 2023

God sometimes says no. And when He does we often wonder why!  One answer is that it’s not a good idea, and another is the motive is bad.  But what about when God says no to a good idea born out of a good motive?  Today we find God saying no to David’s desire to build a house for the Lord.

Humility
When Jesus "made himself nothing ... taking the nature of a servant," He modeled, for all believers, true humility. Murray calls this "our true nobility" and "the distinguishing feature of discipleship." In twelve brief but powerful chapters, Murray journeys through Scripture and Christ's life, underscoring the utmost need for humility---as opposed to pride---in the Christian's life. With insightful, penetrating clarity, Murray calls all Christians to turn from pride, empty themselves, and study the character of Christ to be filled with His grace. Often called the best work on humility ever written.

We’ll pay a visit to Second Samuel six today.  Here we find David’s very public worship when celebrating the return of the Ark. David was scorned by his wife for doing so.  And to have a spouse do such a thing… is a tough pill to swallow?  Through it all we’ll be encouraged to keep our eyes on the Lord.

One of the big lessons in front of us today is if we want to experience God’s blessing, we must do God’s work His way… and not our own way!   In chapter six of Second Samuel, the ark of the covenant is about to be transported to Jerusalem.  On the surface that may seem like a good idea!  But they didn’t go about it the right way, and David failed to seek the Lord.

How did we get here?  What’s the purpose of life? And is there life after death? When you’re looking for answers to the questions of life where do you turn?  Well you really have only two options. Today on Abounding Grace we’’ encourage you towards the wisdom of God.  But very sadly few people access this wisdom as they should. Instead they run to the world, and that only disappoints. Today pastor Ed Taylor takes us to First Corinthians two, starting with verse six.

We’re studying Second Samuel with pastor Ed Taylor on Abounding Grace. At this point David is now King in Jerusalem, just as God said, and has become great to put it mildly.  We’re going to take note of how he handles this God given success!  It’ll serve to help us in so many ways!

Here in America we’re accustomed to getting things we want in an instant… from instant messaging through our phones to fast food.  And we don’t typically like to wait now do we?  So when God has us in the waiting room it can be a real challenge.  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll see that after waiting quite a while, David is finally King over a unified Israel.  It didn’t happen overnight, as God needed to prepare His servant.

Perhaps you had a history teacher like I did that would love to say, “Those who don’t learn history are doomed to repeat it!”  And it’s true isn’t it!  Thankfully as we study the Bible we can learn from both the successes and mistakes of people that have gone on before us.  Today on Abounding Grace we’ll learn a thing or two from David’s mistakes.

With regards to time you’re either wasting it, spending it or investing it. But a good portion of our lives it seems revolves around waiting. Is it really necessary? If so what do we do while we wait on the Lord? We’ll get some practical answers today on Abounding Grace. As we continue our series in Second Samuel David has been promised by God he will reign as king, but he is still having to wait for the fulfillment of that promise.  The way he handles this is noteworthy.

We’re in Second Samuel 2 today.  We all want to be successful in life, but how do you get there?  We’ll learn today it’s found as we seek the Lord.  The moment we go out on our own, in the flesh, we’ll fail miserably.  David would find this out the hard way.

Today we get right back into First Corinthians with pastor Ed Taylor on Abounding Grace.  We’re about to open chapter two, and receive an awesome model for ministry.  Whether you’re preaching the Word behind the pulpit, leading a small group Bible study, or directing traffic in the church parking lot, it’s important to realize we’re not to draw attention to ourselves.  All the glory and honor is to go to God, as we serve Him. That was something the apostle Paul understood very well.

In need of some wisdom today?  Sure, we all are!  And the place to turn for it is the Lord.  At the beginning of his reign David modeled this for us.  We’ll notice that spiritual success, in his life and ours, is linked to prayer.  If you’ll recall, David has been on the run for 10 years, and now that Saul has died, what’s next?  To answer that, David inquires of the Lord.  Good move!
