Doing the Right Thing at the Right Time Part 2

June 2, 2023

We'll be in Second Samuel 11 today on Abounding Grace.   David’s sin with Bathsheeba, and the murder that followed, didn’t just happen.  Like all sin, the pathway was predictable.  And if we’re wise we’ll take note of it, so the next time temptation comes knocking on our door we’ll know how to deal with it.

One of the many problems with sin is that it deceives us into thinking that it’s no big deal.  We think we can stop at any point.  All the while its putting its hooks into us, forging an invisible chain. Before we know it, we awake to the reality that we’re held captive to it, and wondering how to break free. So it’s important to recognize our weakness and vulnerability to sin and discover some practical steps we can take that will serve to protect us.

There are a couple of events in David’s life that would seem to stand out above all others... perhaps the slaying of Goliath is one, and certainly the fall into adultery and murder would be another.   We’ll look at the latter today on Abounding Grace, and seek to learn from David’s mistakes, so that we can avoid going down a similar path.  We’ve seen many triumphs and successes to this point in David’s life, and now like so many of us, he makes a series of poor decisions.  Pastor Ed Taylor observes how it all started with compromise.

As Christians we’re called to be peacemakers, but making peace is not always possible because of the unwillingness of others. Then there’s also the concern of our peacemaking efforts being misjudged or ineffective. What then?  Let’s look to the Scriptures for some answers to these questions today on Abounding Grace!

We’ve all seen power and wealth used for evil, and to hurt others.  But today on Abounding Grace we’ll see how David used his power and wealth to bless others!  This is just part of our continuing study of Second Samuel.  We’ll be in chapter nine today, and we’d invite you to join us there as we see power on display in a unique and godly way!

Where do you go to get wisdom concerning spiritual things? Your local library or college?  Or your friend down the street?  If you look anywhere other than God and His Word, you’ll be disappointed and unsatisfied.  Today on Abounding Grace pastor Ed Taylor urges us to go to God for wisdom of the best kind.  And the Holy Spirit is alone qualified to supply us that wisdom.  That comes to our attention through this passage in First Corinthians two!

Pastor Ed Taylor will open Second Samuel chapters 8 and 9 today.  As you look at David’s life you can sure see how God protected and preserved him… wherever he went.  And you know, God wants to do the same for you.  And today we’ll draw your attention to God’s hand behind the victories and successes of life.

God sometimes says no as he did to David, not because he did anything wrong, but because God had another plan - a better plan. You can be sure God will do this in your life too!  We’ll meet you in Second Samuel chapter seven! God said no to David’s desire to build the temple. He did so not because there was some sin in David’s life but because God had a better plan. And saying no to David would prove to be even more loving than saying yes.

God sometimes says no. And when He does we often wonder why!  One answer is that it’s not a good idea, and another is the motive is bad.  But what about when God says no to a good idea born out of a good motive?  Today we find God saying no to David’s desire to build a house for the Lord.

We’ll pay a visit to Second Samuel six today.  Here we find David’s very public worship when celebrating the return of the Ark. David was scorned by his wife for doing so.  And to have a spouse do such a thing… is a tough pill to swallow?  Through it all we’ll be encouraged to keep our eyes on the Lord.

One of the big lessons in front of us today is if we want to experience God’s blessing, we must do God’s work His way… and not our own way!   In chapter six of Second Samuel, the ark of the covenant is about to be transported to Jerusalem.  On the surface that may seem like a good idea!  But they didn’t go about it the right way, and David failed to seek the Lord.
