Being the Inheritance
“also we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to His purpose who works all things after the counsel of His will,” (Ephesians 1:11, NASB95)
When God made promises to Abraham, it created an inheritance for the Jewish people. In a greater sense, however, the nation of Abraham became an inheritance for God (as the Greek clearly suggests). Translators have often made “In Him we were selected” to “In him we obtained an inheritance.” The Greek word clearly means to have been selected by lot. The nation was selected, through Abraham, because “the counsel of His will” predestined this. Having been selected, Israel is now the inheritance of God (Deuteronomy 32:9, Isaiah 19:25 Joel 3:2 and many more Scripture references).
The selection has and end-goal as well. The nation was not selected for selection sake, but rather to lead to the salvation of the Jews and that they would be “to the praise of His glory.” This is precisely what they will be when the Messiah returns. Israel, having been saved by that time, will glorify Jesus as Messiah and God as the One who fulfills His promises. Jesus comes in the Second Coming, “to be glorified in His saints…and to be marveled at among all who believed” (2 Thessalonians 1:10).
