A Mystery Made Known

He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him” (Ephesians 1:9, NASB95)

The Bible speaks on several occasions about “the secret things of God.” The book of Ephesians is about one particular secret that has now been made known.  Paul refers to this secret as “the mystery of His will.”  This mystery was made known “by revelation” (Ephesians 3:3). That is, it has come from the mind of God itself and is neither discernible nor discoverable through the reading of the Hebrew text. Without the revelation of God to Paul, this secret would not have been made known. In fact, Paul specifically says that the mystery was not made known to other generations (Ephesians 3:5). Now that the mystery has been revealed, it is to be proclaimed and made known through the church (Ephesians 3:10). Before Paul closes his letter, he asks for prayers for boldness so that he will be faithful to make know “the mystery” which is the Gospel.

The Hebrew Scriptures are rich, powerful, inspired, and foundational. They are also only part of the story. To know “the rest of the story,” one must study the Greek text, in which Christ is revealed as the fulfillment of the Law and the mystery of the Gospel is made known.
