Preachers of Pleasure

“The king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, ‘There is yet one man by whom we may inquire of the Lord, but I hate him, because he does not prophesy good concerning me, but evil. He is Micaiah son of Imlah.’  But Jehoshaphat said, ‘Let not the king say so.’” (1 Kings 22:8,)

“If a man walking after wind and falsehood Had told lies and said, ‘I will speak out to you concerning wine and liquor,’ He would be spokesman to this people.” (Micah 2:11,)

In 1 Kings 22, Ahab the wicked King hated Micaiah the prophet “because he does not prophesy good concerning me.”  Ahab rose up a guild of “prophets” who would say what he wanted to hear.

Micah the prophet (prophesying to the same people but a few year’s later) complained that the people were turning to windbags and liars who speak words they want to hear rather than truth-tellers who speak words they need to hear.  To paraphrase, Micah says, “If a preacher preaches ‘go ahead and drink, and enjoy,’ he is the preacher you would turn to!”

America is in severe need of a coalition of preachers who will preach “thus says the Lord” regardless of political correctness.  Preachers who will not preach about and against sin, who will not proclaim the truth of hell and damnation, and who will not denounce the practices of evil are the kind of preachers Ahab would love.
