On Second Thought
Dr. Randy White

"The sons of Israel carried away captive of their brethren 200,000 women, sons and daughters; and they took also a great deal of spoil from them, and brought the spoil to Samaria." (2 Chronicles 28:8, NASB95)

King Ahaz of Judah was not a good man.  He made idols for the Baals, sacrificed his sons to pagan gods, and led Judah to forsake God.  In anger, God allowed Judah to be invaded by Assyria (in conjunction with Israel, the Northern Kingdom).   Israel took this opportunity to carry out revenge against her southern brothers and took every advantage of Judah’s demise.  But upon taking this advantage, a prophet of the Lord named Oded reminded Israel that, though God was punishing Judah, God’s favor would return to His chosen people.  Oded asked a great question of the Northern Kingdom, “Surely, do you not have transgressions of your own against the Lord your God?” (2 Chronicles 28:10).

The Northern Kingdom had second thoughts!  They realized that their actions, though they would feel good at the moment, would bring harm to them in the long-run.  The ultimate cost was way too high.  Having had second thoughts, the Northern Kingdom gave clothing, sandals, food, drink, and medicine and paid for the journey back home.

It is good for us to consider our actions and their ultimate cost.  Perhaps what our heart wants to do is not what would please the heart of God.  If such is the case, we better have second thoughts.
