Danger of the Majority
Dr. Randy White

"Now therefore, behold, the Lord has put a deceiving spirit in the mouth of these your prophets, for the Lord has proclaimed disaster against you." (2 Chronicles 18:22, NASB95)

The prophet Micaiah is not well known, but he has a dramatic story.  When King Ahab—worst of the worst of Israeli Kings—wanted to go to war, he entered into an alliance with King Jehoshaphat, the good king of Judah.  Jehoshaphat insisted on hearing a word from the Lord before going into battle.

Ahab gathered 400 prophets to hear God’s word.  Each of these gave a favorable word about the war.  Ahab was ready to go.  Jehoshaphat, however, had a concern and asked for another prophet to confirm the word of the 400.  In comes Micaiah.  Ahab disliked Micaiah because “he always speaks against me!”

Before the Kings, Micaiah promised to only speak what the Lord had shown him.  And the Lord had given him an unbelievable scene, one that predicted Ahab’s death in the planned battle.  Going further, God had shown His prophet why the 400 prophets had misread the situation:  because of “a deceiving spirit” which would accomplish the will of Sovereign God in the demise of wicked Ahab.

The scripture promises that in the last days a spirit of deception will come upon man.  I believe that God will send this deceiving spirit on preachers, teachers, and political leaders.  This deception will cause many to turn to the Antichrist.  In many ways, we see the spirit of deception already at work.

Following the majority could be very dangerous.  We need to ask God for the spirit of discernment that says, like Jehoshaphat, “Is there not yet a prophet of the Lord here that we may inquire of him?" (2 Chronicles 18:6, NASB95)

Today we do not live in the dispensation of prophets, but we do have the complete Word of God.  Read it daily and follow it diligently and you will avoid the deception of the world.  And, while you’re at it, pray that your Pastor will be a Micaiah!
