Our Way or His?
Dr. Randy White

"For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His. You have acted foolishly in this. Indeed, from now on you will surely have wars." (2 Chronicles 16:9, NASB95)

King Asa of Judah was a good King for most of his 41 year reign.  In the latter years, however, he became financially strong, politically savvy, and personally arrogant.  This change in heart caused God to change His ways toward Asa and his Kingdom.

In the early years, Asa depended upon God.  He removed cultic worship from Judah, even to the extent of having his own mother removed from her position as “Queen Mother.”  God performed a wonderful miracle in allowing Judah’s comparatively weak army to defeat a massive, million-man army from Ethiopia.

After time, however, Asa became independent of God and began to lean on his own understanding.  He made alliances with other Kings for military power and sought physicians before he sought the Lord for physical healing.  Asa made God secondary.  His philosophy became “do what you can, then turn to God to do the rest.”

God’s philosophy is different!  He desires us to go to him first!

In churches, families, businesses, communities, and schools, our modern response to problems is to use our political savvy and financial strength to outwit the problem.  We make alliances, forge strategies, gather advisors, and solidify our plans.  God is left out.

Yet, He desires to show Himself strong to those whose heart is completely His.  Let’s be reminded that our strategies and planning sessions are, at times, offensive to God.  If we will wait on God and patiently do His will, He will reveal strategies and plans that will cause us to stand in awe of Him.

In His Grace,
Dr. Randy White
