Abigail said, "So now, my lord, as the Lord lives and as your soul lives, seeing that the Lord has prevented you from blood guiltiness and from avenging yourself with your own hand, now let your enemies and those who seek to do evil to my lord be as Nabal. And now this gift, which your handmaid has brought my lord, let it be given to the young men who follow my lord. Forgive, I pray you, the trespass of your handmaid, for the Lord, will certainly make my lord a sure house, because my lord is fighting the Lord's battles, and evil has not been found in you all your days."
I Samuel 25: 26 - 28, Amplified Bible
"Walking In God's Will"
"A (woman's (heart) is right when (she) wills what God wills."
Am I walking within the will of my Father in heaven?
"You are to think of yourself as only existing in this world to do God's will. To think that you are your own is as absurd as to think you are self-created. It is an obvious first principle that you belong completely to God."
"Rule. Hold this as a fixed verity, that it is best which God wills."
For many years as I have read the Bible, I seemed to skip over or ignore the fact that God's daughters had so much to say.
If you begin with Miriam and the women of Israel praising God after the joyous rescue through the sea from Pharaoh's army to the words of Deborah the Judge in the Old Testament to Jesus' mother, Mary, in the New Testament, women have not only had a great deal to say, in addition, much of what they have said is not only beautiful, but also filled with wisdom.
Today again we find when God's daughter, Abigail, opened her mouth, she had something relevant to say.
After bowing before David and treating him in a respectful manner, Abigail praised David, not because of his human qualities but because of his heavenly behavior.
Rather than flatter David with idle chatter, Abigail went straight to the heart of what made David a "man after God's own heart." She reminded him how God had been with him and watched over him. She also went a step further and told David he had used Godly wisdom in not treating her, Nabal and their household in a rash manner.
Then she added, "You didn't use your own hand to avenge yourself."
What I admire most about this speech by Abigail is that there were lots of things she could have said to focus attention on herself. She could have told David how glad he should be that she came along to break up the quarrel between David and her husband. She could have heaped praise on her own insight and wisdom.
Instead, in this moment when it would have been easy to take the glory on herself, Abigail focused the attention on her heavenly Father and the way He had not only led her life but had led David's, too.
This is the sign of someone who is walking within the will of God. Abigail was walking in the path of her Father in heaven and the credit for any and all success in her life went not to her own wisdom, but to her Father's.
What a wonderful lesson for us each day as we interact with those around us. Any success we reap and any bounty that is bestowed on us comes from our Father's hand. When we correctly point to the one who our success is dependent upon, we are rightly, as Abigail did, giving glory to God.
"The whole science of the saints consists in finding out and following God's will."
Isidore of Seville
Be Thou My Vision
"Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart,
Naught be all else to me save that Thou art;
Thou my best thought by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping Thy presence my light.
Be Thou my wisdom, be Thou my true word,
I ever with Thee, Thou with me, Lord;
Thou my great Father I Thy true (child).
Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one.
High King of heaven, when victory is won,
May I reach heaven's joys O bright heaven's Sun,
Christ of my own heart, whatever befall,
Still be my vision,
O Ruler of all."
