Luke 2:16-19 (NIV®)

So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.

We all have a romanticized vision of the scene at the manger. Yours may look like the nativity set you display at Christmas―the animals and the familiar cast of characters all gazing at the baby in the straw—all looking very peaceful. I doubt that Joseph and Mary were feeling so calm. They had been through a surprise pregnancy in a small village. Joseph had put his pregnant wife on the back of a donkey and then told her their baby would be born in a barn. Mary had given birth only to find strangers coming to stare at her baby and then leave to talk about her family. She endured all of that, yet Scripture says, “Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” I read that and hear Mary making an intentional decision to pull the God pieces of her life together and hold them close. She could have been angry that her life hadn’t gone according to plan, but she chose to trust God and wait for His purposes to unfold. What are you holding close today? Are you keeping the promises of God in your heart and pondering them as you wait for His purposes to be fulfilled in your life?

Heavenly Father, I am humbled as I think about the two young people who endured so much to trust You and allow Your plan to unfold through their lives. Give me the same resolve when following You doesn’t fit with my plans and my preconceived notions of what Your plans should be. Fulfill Your purposes in me, Lord. In the name of Jesus, the very Son of God born in a manger, amen.
