Top of the List
1 Peter 2:9-10 (NIV®)
You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
To be a Christ-follower makes us a part of God’s covenant people in the earth, and we will never have a designation that will exceed that. Most of us attach labels to ourselves, and how we relate to our world filters through those categories. We may see ourselves first through our gender or our nationality or our race or our marital status. Peter is suggesting that at the top of our self-awareness is the knowledge that we are the people of God, Christ-followers. This doesn’t change those other classifications, but they all come after our most important identity: We belong to Jesus of Nazareth.
THINK ABOUT IT
What labels do you apply to yourself? Think about how you would put them in order—is Christ-follower at the top of your list?
Heavenly Father, I choose to let the fear of God grow and flourish in my heart and mind. I rejoice in Your wisdom and Your strength. May the Living Word of God come alive within me, to guide me, restore me, and renew me. Thank You for choosing me so that I may declare Your praises for calling me out of darkness and into Your wonderful light. Your mercy is a gift in my life. May my life bring You honor and glory forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
