The Battle

Ephesians 6:18

And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

In Ephesians 6:10-17, there’s a discussion about spiritual conflict and the spiritual armor necessary to “take your stand against the devil's schemes.” The summary is in verse 18, which tells us that after we’ve got all the armor in place, we need to pray in the Spirit—directed by the Spirit, with all kinds of prayer. It doesn’t say “practice self-discipline” or “withdraw from the battlefield.” It says “pray in the Spirit,” because that’s the key to changing our thinking. Even a disciplined person who’s withdrawn from many of the temptations of the world still faces those internal struggles that challenge the invitations of God. And prayer is given to us as that powerful tool for transformation. Prayer isn’t part of the battle—it is the battle.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of Your Holy Spirit. I want to cooperate with Him in every way You would like. You have promised to hear my prayers, Lord, and I trust You to do that. Make me a more faithful prayer warrior, both for myself and others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
