Our Sole Focus

Luke 4:8 (NIV®)

Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.’”

When God gave the Ten Commandments in the book of Exodus, He first reminded Moses that “I am the LORD your God,” then issued the first commandment: “You shall have no other gods before me” (Ex. 20:1-2 NIV®). In the ancient world various people groups worshiped a whole host of gods. They practiced animism in its various forms, worshiping places, objects, animals, and even natural events like the weather. The Egyptian sorcerers called forth some of their pagan gods during the Exodus account only to see them humiliated before the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The Romans of the New Testament had no objection if the Christian God wanted to be one more of their pantheon of gods. Their objection was that if you claimed He was the only God, because Caesar even proclaimed himself to be a god. The first commandment became the reason so many of the early Christians were executed; they wouldn’t say Caesar was a god, because they would have no other gods before Almighty God. This a fundamental notion to the unfolding story of God’s work in the earth, from the earliest chapters right through the New Testament and into the twenty-first century: God alone should be the focus of our worship.

THINK ABOUT IT

Consider how you spend your time and your resources, and what occupies your thoughts. Is there anyone or anything other than God that contends for first place in your life?

PRAYER

Heavenly Father, You are the creator and sustainer of all things. You are the one and only true God—full of grace, mercy, and power. I choose to honor You with all my days. Through Your faithfulness allow me to throw off anything that hinders or leads me away from You. I choose this day to make You alone the focus of my life and the only One I want to please. To You be all glory, honor, and power—now and forevermore. In Jesus’ name, amen.
