Cultivating Growth

Matthew 3:8 (NIV®)

“Produce fruit in keeping with repentance.”

In this verse producing fruit means making changes, specifically the life changes that flow from a repentant heart. One of the characteristics of maturing Christ-followers is our willingness to change to let His character be formed in us. It is not just a trait of those who are new to the faith; it should also be true of those of us who have been following Jesus for a lengthy season. To be a Christ-follower is to recognize that one day every one of us, as the Scripture teaches, will stand before the Judge of all the earth. We’ll be given an open-book test, and we’ve been told how to prepare so that we need not fear it. We should be able to show up at that appointment thrilled about the reward that is awaiting us. The process begins with believing that Jesus is Lord, then confessing it with your mouth, publically acknowledging it, and continually producing the “fruit in keeping with repentance.”

As you think about your faith journey, there probably have been seasons when you have experienced more spiritual growth and change than others. This is likely true of all of us, but let’s pray that the Holy Spirit would give us fewer slow seasons and more forward progress, and then seek His help to move ahead.

Heavenly Father, hear my prayer and cleanse me from all sin. I desire Your character above my own ways. Thank You for sending Jesus, Your Son, to die on the cross for my sin. Let this season bring forth good fruit in my life and a willingness to seek You and Your ways every day. Your presence is a gift in my life, and it is my desire to be pleasing to You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
