A Creative Invitation

Luke 1:11-13 (NIV®)

Then an angel of the Lord appeared to him, standing at the right side of the altar of incense. When Zechariah saw him, he was startled and was gripped with fear. But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah; your prayer has been heard. Your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son, and you are to give him the name John.”

Zechariah was a priest, serving in the temple in Jerusalem at his appointed time. He was standing next to the altar of incense when he saw an angel, and his response was pretty predicable: he was terrified. And the angel said, “Zechariah, I’m here because of your prayer.” Wow. Zechariah and Elizabeth were an older couple with no children. Their prayers opened the doors for God to move, and the result was the birth of John the Baptist and all that his life entailed. We will never know what the outcome would have been if Zechariah and Elizabeth hadn’t prayed but contented themselves with grumbling and resentment. But they did pray, and because of their persistence they had a divine appointment and a baby on the way. Prayer is not a last resort. Prayer is a creative invitation to Almighty God to unleash His power in our lives.

Have there been times when God honored your persistent prayers, even when the results seemed unlikely? Thank Him for His faithfulness, and find an opportunity to tell someone else what the Lord has done for you.

Heavenly Father, I desire to see You exalted in and through my life. Teach me to pray as Zechariah and Elizabeth prayed, believing with faith in You and Your purposes. I believe Your plan is bigger than my problems and that You will accomplish more than I can fully understand. I humbly come today and bring You the issues in my life that are impossible for me to change without Your intervention. Prepare me to persevere until You have revealed Your answers. Give me wisdom to ask You for the right things and to trust Your timing. In Jesus’ name, amen.
