Covering Your Tracks
Then Achish would say, “Where have you made a raid today?” And David would say, “Against the southern area of Judah, or against the southern area of the Jerahmeelites, or against the southern area of the Kenites.” David would save neither man nor woman alive, to bring news to Gath, saying, “Lest they should inform on us, saying, ‘Thus David did.’ ” And thus was his behavior all the time he dwelt in the country of the Philistines.
1 Samuel 27:10-11
David continued his “search and destroy” missions. He wiped out towns and stole all their possessions. He killed men, women and children, because he did not want to leave any witnesses to accuse him before King Achish. When David took the spoils from the raids to King Achish, he made him believe they were from his own people––those in Israel.
During this time, David had become a deceptive liar. David was dishonest and unjust in all he was doing. David, the mighty warrior, was completely out of God’s will for a long time––16 months in enemy territory! He was fighting for the Philistines instead of fighting against them. In Israel, he had fought against Goliath of Gath (1 Samuel 17). In defeating the Philistine, he won a great victory. Now he was on the opposing side.
What was he doing in the enemies’ camp? He was not really safe in the enemies’ territory. David was supposed to be walking with God, trusting Him, and waiting on Him to do a work in his life. David had a call to be the King of Israel. Instead, he was afraid of King Saul who had persecuted him, so he chose to hide with the enemy. David felt he would be the one to perish, but it was not him who would die––it was Saul.
Has fear caused you to deviate from God’s perfect will for your life? Trust in the promises of God, and realign your will with His. Get back on track!
