Columbus Day
Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.

Some sects of society have decided that our history needs to be rewritten––sad. Recently, historical statues around the country have been torn down. Such was the case of Italian born, explorer Christopher Columbus. Rioters toppled a statue of Columbus in St. Paul, Minnesota. Other statues of Christopher Columbus were vandalized in Boston, Miami and Virginia––this is lawlessness––and lawlessness is sin.
It has been said, these criminal actions were motivated by anger toward slavery and colonialism. Franklin Roosevelt established Columbus Day as a federal holiday in 1934 to commemorate the 1492 landing of Christopher Columbus to the New World. President Trump has since issued an executive order protecting American Monuments, Memorials and statues. Anyone defacing them can be sentenced up to 10 years in prison.
Children in school learn about our great American history. In 1984, President Ronald Reagan said: “This great explorer won a place in history and in the hearts of all Americans because he challenged the unknown and thereby found a New World.” Did you know Columbus was not only a seafaring man, but a Christian statesman? He sought the Lord for this great adventure:
“I prayed to the most merciful Lord about my heart’s great desire, and He gave me the spirit and the intelligence for the task: seafaring, astronomy, geometry, arithmetic, skill in drafting spherical maps and placing correctly the cities, rivers, mountains and ports. I also studied cosmology, history, chronology and philosophy.”
I believe, you cannot rewrite history, but we can certainly learn from history’s great successes and terrible mistakes.
