Slaves of God

But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life.
Romans 6:22

James was a true servant of God; he understood the meaning of the word. The word servant in Greek is doulos: “a slave, one who gives himself up to another’s will––one whose service is used by Christ in extending and advancing His cause among men.” James was in submission to God; he understood Christ’s lordship over his life.

Another word for servant in the Greek languageis huperetes: “an underling, servant––as a crewman on a boat, an under rower who mans the oars on a lower deck; a subordinate.”

As we are servants of God, the Lord governs and rules our lives. We are to be in submission to Him. He comes first––we no longer reign over our lives, but God reigns over us. He governs. He teaches us to be open to the work of the Holy Spirit. It is as if we are in the military. When God asks us to do something, we should respond, “Yes sir.”  In holiness, I am open to serve Him with my whole heart.

God desires to work in our lives and use us in a greater capacity––for His glory––unto His holy name. It is no longer about you and me. He is the one who deserves all the honor.  Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world (John 1:29). He is the One whom we serve.

When we come to Christ, we’re no longer the most important person in the world to us; Christ is. Instead of living only for ourselves, we have a higher goal: to live for Jesus.
